Dmitry Lyamin, a resident of Shuya in the Ivanovo region, was one of the first to protest Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, by setting fire to a military recruitment office. He carried out the act on the night of March 18-19, just under a month after the war began.
He was arrested on March 19. Initially charged with “destruction or damage to property” (Article 167, Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code), the charges were later upgraded to “terrorist act” (Article 205, Part 1).
On April 13, 2023, Lyamin was sentenced to 8 years in prison—3 years in a regular prison and the rest in a high-security penal colony.
The prison in Balashov is one of seven maximum-security institutions in Russia, reserved for the most dangerous criminals, including those convicted of “terrorism.”
