Sergei Karmazin — Ukrainian Citizen from Kharkiv Region

A Russian court sentenced Sergei Karmazin to 25 years in prison on charges of sabotage on the railway.

Sergei was detained in Moscow on February 15, 2023. According to law enforcement, Karmazin set fire to two signal, centralization, and automatic blocking cabinets on the Moscow railway. A case was opened under the article on sabotage (Paragraph “a,” Part 2, Article 281 of the Russian Criminal Code).

Karmazin was placed in the FSB-controlled Lefortovo Detention Center, where he was denied access to an independent lawyer. Lawyer Dmitry Sotnikov challenged the denial, but the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow sided with law enforcement.

Over the course of a year-long investigation, the case against the 46-year-old Kharkiv native expanded to include multiple charges:

  • “Espionage” (Article 276 of the Criminal Code),
  • “Training for sabotage activities” (Article 281.2),
  • “Preparation for the manufacture of explosives” (Part 1, Article 30; Part 3, Article 223.1),
  • “Participation in a sabotage community” (Part 2, Article 281.3),
  • “Participation in a terrorist community” (Part 2, Article 205.4),
  • “Preparation for a terrorist act” (Part 1, Article 30; Part 1, Point “a,” Part 2, Article 205),
  • “Training for terrorist activities” (Article 205.3).

On March 28, 2024, a panel of judges from the 2nd Western District Military Court, chaired by Maksim Maksimenko, sentenced Sergei Karmazin to 25 years in prison. Of this, 6 years must be served in prison, with the remainder in a high-security penal colony.

On July 31, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence without any changes.
